PP2: Red Deer River - Alberta Fishing
Red Deer River is a major central Alberta stream running from the foothills near Sundre through Gleniffer Reservoir and east toward the Saskatchewan border; nearest town Sundre. Regulations differ by reach: upper sections (Banff National Park boundary to Forestry Trunk Road, and Forestry Trunk Road downstream to Gleniffer) are open Apr. 1–Oct. 31 with bait bans on some stretches, the reach from Dickson Dam to Tolman Bridge is open May 15–Mar. 1 with only maggots allowed, and the section from Tolman Bridge to the Alberta–Saskatchewan border is open May 15–Mar. 31 with bait allowed. Species-specific rules include total trout closures on some headwater reaches (0 trout), mountain whitefish commonly 3 over 30 cm in affected reaches, northern pike generally limited to 3 (or 3 over 63 cm on some reaches), burbot often 2 with a Feb. closure to 0 in late winter (but up to 10 fish in the Forestry Trunk Road–Gleniffer reach), goldeye 10, and varying walleye/sauger combinations (e.g. 0 walleye/3 sauger in one reach, and 3 in combination with walleye over 50 cm in another).
